2004 Journeys of Islington
These paintings and drawings represent locations in Islington and the layers of history upon it. Text has been incorporated onto the image, a self-written factual ‘report’ about the location. The text changes from being readable to unreadable because, as the author Peter Ackroyd writes, hidden history often overlaps into the present. The facts I find from local history resources are not usually well-known, to recreate a feeling of discovery for the viewer.
Essex Rd is often seen as the shabby sister to trendy nearby Upper St. In this painting of a location on Essex Road, I wanted to convey the sense of liveliness and movement on a sunny winter's day.
This painting is of Highbury Corner and its character is defined by its history. The canvas has layers of oil paint, both thick and thin, and charcoal upon its surface.
